So, what exactly is the problem with putting AdBlue in your diesel tank? Seeing as AdBlue is predominantly deionised water, it's just like pouring water in your tank. Diesel and water will not blend in any way and trying to run a diesel car on water cannot work. Additionally, the urea is quite corrosive to fuel system pipes and seals and is at risk of crystallisation, blocking injectors and filters.

In the case you poured AdBlue into the fuel tank remove it immediately. And of course be careful not to switch on the engine - not even to shift it to a parking area. In cases where you did start the vehicle you will most likely need to have the entire fuel system flushed and fuel filters changed out.

Fuel contaminated with water

Water contaminated fuel, irrespective of whether it is petrol or diesel, is generally an important condition to take care of in a vehicle - especially in modern day common-rail engines. Having water in diesel or petrol is likely to produce idling problems, lumpy running, abnormal smoke and, if it's not dealt with correctly, possibly broken injectors. Water in petrol is quicker to remove compared to water in diesel - largely due to the fact that diesel is an oil. Even so we are able to handle both situations fairly quickly.

Remember however that if ever the vehicle was started with the water contaminated fuel it will most likely need a new fuel filter to be fitted since the previous one will probably be wholly wet and ineffective.
